Getting A New Asphalt Driveway? 3 Tips To Keep It In Good Condition

Posted on: 21 June 2021

If you are getting a new asphalt driveway installed, there are many things you can do to preserve it. This is important as doing this will make your driveway last much longer for you to help you save a lot of money and time. Keep reading, and you will have a beautiful driveway for many years.

Cracks

Even though your driveway will stay in great condition for a long period of time, you still need to watch out for cracks. Even a small crack can quickly become a larger one and then get much worse. It is easy to take care of cracks, and you can do this on your own.

There are crack fillers or sealers available at home improvement stores. You clean out the crack if there is any dust or dirt in it and then squeeze the filler or sealer into the crack. There is a tool that you use to spread the sealant or filler to make it flat. You then must wait for a certain amount of time for the filler or sealer to dry. The sealer you purchase will have instructions along with it.

Fog Seals

Fog seal will add extra protection to the surface of your asphalt driveway. You can have this done after your driveaway is installed and is dry if you prefer. This will help prevent cracks from developing, prevent damage from the sun, and protect against spills, such as oil, etc.

The sealant is made of water, asphalt, and a surfactant. The product is sprayed onto your driveway. During the spraying, a fog appears, which is why this is called a fog sealer. During the process, the driveway will also be cleaned as the fog seal will clean dirt and debris from the driveway.

Overlay

Once your asphalt driveway becomes much older, you can have an overlay applied to it to restore it. Once this is done, it is like you have a brand-new driveway. This is much cheaper than having the driveway removed and then a new driveway poured. The contractor will first make any repairs that need to be made, such as repairing cracks and other damage.

Once the asphalt is ready, the contractor applies the asphalt overlay. They may do more than one layer or just do one layer. This will all depend on your driveway and how much of it was removed.

Besides these things, keep your driveway clean and do not allow large trucks and other heavy vehicles to drive on it.
